Teen artist adds color to the Big Flats Library

Justin Gregory has never been a fan of a blank wall. Now the Horseheads Middle School student has brought color and life to the windows at the Big Flats Branch of the Chemung County Library District.

Justin painted the windows at the library after pitching the idea to and gaining approval from Library District officials. According to District Director Ronald Shaw, “The Board and staff were very receptive to the idea. The staff and patrons look forward to seeing what he’s going to do next.”

The window painting project gave Justin the opportunity to use a variety of themes, from Dr. Seuss to the Beatles, in ways that appeal to audiences of all ages.

“The inspiration for the windows has come from my desire to learn more about art in general, and drawing in particular” said Justin, “I read art books, how to draw books, and study anatomy. I guess you could say that my mind is a melting pot of my own and others’ ideas with my own style added. The windows themselves are painted in reverse and take about 3-5 hours to complete.”

Library Board member Judy Sell noted that “Justin enjoys painting the windows. His work shows how much he enjoys it and we hope others will enjoy it as well. The ultimate goal is to pull in readers.”
